Jade Aldens monologue (Sonia De Abreu)

'My names Jade, Jade Alden, I don’t know where to start, where to begin. I don't know whether to blame him or myself I got myself into this situation no one else. I was wreckless enough to go to where i am now but i've got to put on a brave face besides image is everything.

I don’t care. I wanted it all to be perfect but its not. I've just been kidding myself because I didn’t want it to be true but at the end of the day no bodies perfect and I've failed everyone people always say that being young is the best time in your life, but its not, its not I just want to be able to wake up from this horrible nightmare that just wont go away no on knows who I am and I cant take it, I can't take people constantly telling me whats wrong with, I know whats wrong with me! No one gives a shit and no one will ever give a shit. So I guess, I guess its just me me and my baby this is my life and these 39 weeks that lie ahead of me will mark the rest of my life.'

This monologue was written by my self and in my opinion sums up the character of Jade very well. It shows that she is a strong minded character and understands that her life could be better. I think that by having this non-diagetic sound commentary over our opening sequence we involve the audience much more and therefore make them more interested.

Evaluating technology- Tripod (Sonia De Abreu)

Of course a tripod is crucial when it comes to filming unless you want a film made by what it will look like to be a dog yet there did prove to be some annoying factors with the tripod. It enabled us to film good steady shots yet when it came to turning the tripod when we were filming a shot that established our set for example you could hear the jerking of the tripod in the background which really was a let down seeing as we were not able to use that shot because of it. With technology on the increase though you can now get tripods that work with a remote control like the Sony camcorder also allows you to control your tripod with a remote control on the tripod. As well as this the tripod extends from 19-56 inches and has tilt and pan controls which are used for easy movement.

As well as this the music used in the clip is all upbeat and urban which is exactly the type of music we used because it goes with both the character and the mise-en-scene. This type of music is commonly used in drama movies.

Evauluation- what have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? Review on the Sony Handycam HDR-XR155

This is the camera we used to film our opening sequence, this camera in my opinion is 5 star. It has advanced Exmor R CMOS sensor, which is known for outstanding low-light performance this means that you can be sure to get the sharpest image, even when shooting indoors or in the dark.  As well as this it has auto mode which automatically adjusts to whatever scene you in without you even having to do any work. It has 25x optical zoom which we only used whilst we weren't filming as we know that zoom NEVER looks good on tape, yet despite this the zoom was extremely useful for extreme close ups and in general for capturing even the smallest of detail. Images are both sharp and crystal clear.

Similar Media Texts (Francesca Jones)

The film I choose to analyse although not a British production is Juno (2007 directed by Jason Reitman). It was difficult trying to find an existing British media text that hasn't already been used as there are only a few.
Juno is similar to our production in the way that Juno is about a teenager who not only is pregnant but has to go through the hard times of adolescence. Although there are many differences between this film and our film '39 Weeks' I feel that this film was slightly influencial towards our decision to create '39 Weeks' due to its coming of age and pregnancy theme. Juno focuses more on the commical side of the issues faced during pregnancy and Juno, played by Ellen Page is the perfect character to do so with plently of sarcasic and witty comments along the way.

Feelings we want to emit through the monologue (SONIA DE ABREU)

Props used (Sonia De Abreu)

Wine to show the sophistication of the sister and friend was simply made with blackcurrant juice and wine glasses we also used foundation a cheap phone and cigarettes and that is basically what the opening sequence consisted of.

Script (Fran Jones)

We decided whilst planning our piece not to create a major script apart from the monolouge spoken by 'Jade' as we thought we were going to have the monolouge playing over the whole piece. But to add more texture and give us a chance to use a range of different characters we decided to add some last minute dialouge, a exchange between the character 'Jade' and her sister 'Sarah'. Some of the dialouge recorded at first wasn't successfull but after cutting it down we are finally content with it.

Where it all takes place (Sonia De Abreu)

The kitchen where we filmed the scene between Jade, her sister and her sister's friend

The stairs in which she comes down

Her room is untidy yet girly and chic contrasting her personality and the way she looks. We purposely did this to demonstrate that these so called 'asbo teenagers' in actual fact are not as bad as people think. People are almost brought up nowadays to believe teenagers are all bad, all the same and never achieving just failing all the time yet our movie exemplifies a case of a how a teenager is how she is because she's going through her really tough time.

Her table with all the girly items such as perfumes, makeup and Jades fags and money. - (very little of it)
The door in which was used in our opening sequence. Sadly in the film because it was sunny the light reflected through the door and you can see the brightness coming through this is something we were unable to prevent.
Where the conversation took place between the sister and friend. Jade walks into this shot.

23/3/11 (Fran Jones)

Today we almost completed the piece, that unfortunately has taken longer than we expected. Finding appropriate music for our opening was harder than I thought and after including a piece of music that sounded like a hoover we decided to change it for a more up beat piece, that although is categorised into 'hip hop' fits our opening nicely. We also added some transition effects which makes certain areas of our  production that we hated, look alot more professional and effective. All that is left to do is the credits then we are done!! With 39 Weeks that is. Next is to do the evaluation which will be where we can complain about our piece even more.

Mdia Institution (Francesca Jones)

Metrodome is a distribution group which aims to provide the film industry with expert producers and features of film and TV from and in the UK.
They also aim to create cost effective release strategies and are keen to provide the best marketing, press and release campaigns that capture the imagination of the audience.
Although not all there films are set in the UK they have distributed films such as: Blood Brothers, Butterflys, Sherrybaby, Dianna and Down Terrace.
A selection of films that they produce are similar to our piece '39 Weeks' in the way that they focus on coming of age and social issues such as pregnancy etc. However the films like this that Metrodome have distributed are not all situated in the UK and due to their graphic sexual and drug use content have high certificates therefore older audiences than our piece of media.

Our storyline (Sonia De Abreu)

If we were to make this in to a real movie our story would consist of the character of Jade's journey. From how the tables really turn around when she becomes pregnant and realises that she has to change her life around. She decides to stop the smoking, the drug use, the binge drinking and become a committed single mum and prove to her family that she can really change her life around.

In the opening sequence you see her with a bruised eye which demonstrates her rough background. The story behind it being she got in to a fight with a girl due to being called a slag because of the fact she was pregnant. Her monologue emphasises how rough her life is and how her ex boyfriends just abandoned her in the state she's in.

As the story goes on its aim is to be thrilling, touching and almost frightening when you see how she acts in her life and her journey. It should take the audience on a cathartic journey and leave them in tears.

Jade Aldens costume (Sonia De Abreu)

Skinny blue jeans. Modern, urban and on trend. Not too 'chavvy'' yet simple.

Everyone owns a pair of these. They're comfortable and not too pretty looking or even girly. They suit our character because they're 'cool'

These hoop earrings make the character really look the part and makes her look more urban and ghetto to go with her character

This simple black cardigan and white vest top ensemble was used to emphasise her stomach and keep the attention on both her stomach and her bruised eye. The contrast with the white vest top and the bruised eye makes the bruises look both more real and vivid.

A Film similar to ours (Sonia De Abreu)

MUSIC: The music used is very urban and hip-hop which goes with the audience the movie aims to attract. Young teenagers that could possibly relate to these characters.
LANGUAGE: The language used by these characters is very 'ghetto' and 'chavvy' which again compliments the music and related to how teenagers of today act.
CLOTHING: Clothes in generally street wear such as tracksuit bottoms and hoodies. Very common mainstream stuff seen today. Short tarty skirts and top buttons undone.
SETTING: The setting in this film is very much the realities of inner city life with a lot of public transport and council estates for instance. It makes this film more believable.
ACTORS: In general all the actors and actresses used are young teenagers. They come from either a black background or completely white english background which fits the movie very well. All characters have attitude and a londoners accent.

23/03/2011 (Sonia De Abreu)

Put it this way free music archive is the one! We got exactly the piece of music we were looking for to go with our opening sequence. Its the closest to perfect we can get. Its quite urban, modern, hip hop which is exactly what we were looking for! Its way better than the one we use to have and has made our piece look 5 times better. We also added in some cross dissolves so that the cuts look smoother and in general makes the opening sequence in my opinion look more interesting. Our piece isn't perfect, isn't anything near what I had in mind but I think its not because of a lack of effort thats been put in to it, in fact I wouldn't say thats not the case at all we have been faced with many obstacles that has set us back yet I think we have tried our very best. If I was to go back in time planning, planning, planning is what I would prioritise because it really is crucial. Every single detail is needed to make your piece work and to really bring it together. Without planning (which isn't what we did yet I would definitely say there was a lack of it) it just flops. Its like trying to build a house with out bricks. IMPOSSIBLE

Evaluation - (Marialucia)

Today we added cross dissolves in between our clips to create invisible edits because our cuts were very jumpy and did not look professional.
We were looking on websites for music, such as: mobi, free music archiv to look for music. The music we currently have in our film clip does not sound suitable for the theme of our production.
We found our music on free music archiv and are currently uploading it into our production. As we didn't film enough media we are limited to the clips we can choose from. However we are working hard to make our film look the best it can be.

How does your media product represent a particular social group? (Sonia De Abreu)

Jade Alden is an example of a typical teenage girl. She's going through her hard times in the opening sequence and all teenagers go through both tough and good times filled with a catharsis of emotions. Were representing the teenage side of life that is shunned upon in society and rejected. We want to show people that even though these teenagers are badly behaved, they can turn there life around. There is in fact light at the end of the tunnel.

Todays lesson (15/03/2011) By Sonia De Abreu

Today I attempted to make the title on the program live type we decided upon the name of 'vision production' as a production title because its memorable and it gives us power and it depicts a deeper message. We found livetype extremely useful because of all the different fonts and titles we could use and found that it could really jazz up our opening sequence. Fran carried on with the editing of our piece as we wanted the cuts to look smooth. At the moment we are attempting to find different music to see if its better than the one we have now as we want something more urban and upbeat to go with the character of Jade and the general story line.

LAST MINUTE REFILMING

Vanessa and I (sonia) have decided that our shots are too general. We don't have enough shot reverse shot, or close ups or extreme close up's. Leading from this we have concluded that it would be better to go back and refilm some shots to try and gain a better finishing piece. In these couple of lessons me and Vanessa have managed to get a suitable piece of music from http://www.freeplaymusic.com/. Despite originally wanting to make our music on garageband we have found too many flaws in our final piece and therefore we have to take up most of our spare time to try and recover this.

The week overview (Sonia)

I would say that we have managed to edit most of our piece, we have encountered many problems that can't be resolved now as it is too late. For example the lighting suddenly gets really dim because of the fact that it took us so long to film concluding from this the cuts look quite weird because the lighting is completely different. We have now gone on to creating the piece of music to go with our opening sequence  at first we wanted to get a piece of music from the website freeplaymusic.com but we came to a conclusion that making our own piece of music on garageband would sound more effective and because its our own be more original.

Starting to edit (Fran Jones)

Yesterday Maria and myself attempted to edit our piece. Already we have had a few issues with editing our production. I was finding that the piece wasn't 'flowing' nicely and even after I had cut and changed clips, still wasn't 100% happy with the opening. There hasn't been enough space left in between clips to cut and edit clips smoothly and some clips are just not fitting together. It needs alot more editing and persistence in order for our group to achieve a successful outcome.

Planning stages: Music and Style (Francesca Jones)

The opening to our film 39 Weeks is based around the life of a pregnant teenager. In order to try and connect to an audience of young adults we tried to make the characters look as plain as possible, in order to be able to relate to everyone not just one group of people. I am trying to find music that doesn't necessarily appeal to a certain type of person but music that would suit the scene or situation perfectly. In order to use unlicensed music I am looking into using music from the website www.freeplaymusic.com although at the moment am having problems getting into the site and using he music on there. So I am looking at the styles of music we could create on Garageband.

Comparing films (Vanessa Gurung)

Before filming for our opening sequence we suggested to look at a variety of teenage films, which inspired us to take elements from. The most popular film chosen by our group was 'Thirteen' and 'Juno'. We have taken elements from each film and decided to inspire our opening sequence on the idea of teenage troubled life, and how the stereotypical views of the youth has become reality.  We chosen to portray our teenage as a young girl who has been abused throughout her childhood.

Editing and evaluating - (Marialucia)

Today we watched all of our recorded footage and decided on where the best edits should be. After our mistakes made while recording the wrong subject of us talking and not acting. We found enough footage that we could use however not as much as we would have liked to make our sequence the best it could be. All together we recorded around 50 minutes of footage which is enough for 3 minutes of confidently constructed film. We are half way through editing our film and has so far been successful, we have tried to include a wide range of editing styles. Such as shot reverse shot.
In the second scene of myself (Marialucia), Vanessa and Sonia. We used the edit of shot reverse shot to convey a sense of distance between the sister and her friend and the main character (Jade). It shows hostility between the family and Jade is clearly a troubled teenager. We see this as she tries to smoke while pregnant and also has a black eye which shows her bad life style.

So we have a little problem...

We filmed horrayyyy!!
So there we are all happy with our hard days of work. We go into school upload what we've done and all is running well, yay we managed to film around 2 hours which took us around 10 hours to film because of discussion, makeup, costume, buying the cigarettes and things like that we plug our camera in open imovie, start importing to find

DISASTER

Instead of filming me acting we filmed mostly us discussing and walking around with the camera.

And this is the point when we thank God we listened to Mr Roberts and Mr philip :)

In filming using a variety of angles we did infact manage to get all of it filmed despite possibly not being the best of angles we can stilll manage to pull it off.

And the moral of the story? MAKE SURE YOU DOUBLE CHECK WHEN THE CAMERA IS RECORDING AND WHEN IT IS NOT!!! THIS IS CRUCIAL

Deciding on our movies name?

These are all the names we came up with now on to the deciding.... hmmmmm?

Jade (By Sonia De Abreu)

Typing in teenager in to the internet these are some of the images that come up:

These images show how a teenager is depicted in the media. In fact in typing teenager in to google only around 1/5 of these images demonstrate teenagers as happy, looking content with their lives. From conductiong this research I decided that we had to create the character of Jade to be a stressed worried anxious character that leads a hard life with a cheerless yet heated personality.

I also conducted a questionnaire to support my research on google images asking 4 people to simply describe teenager.
Questionnaire by Sonia De Abreu :
Name? Anne
Age? 54
Describe teenager ‘Teenagers of nowadays are nothing how they use to be, in fact they’re just getting worse and worse. You see teenagers walking around pregnant, in our day you would get a right beating if that was the case. In fact having a baby out of wed lock was seen as mental and you would have been put in a mental institution because of it. It demonstrates abnormal behaviour and nothing more.’

Name? Maria
Age? 75
Describe teenager ‘To be honest if anything the word teenager is something I fear, they roam the streets at night with no respect vandalising, littering, drinking, smoking. Absolutely no respect.  Back in my day whether you were 70, 60, 50, 30 whatever your age no one was scared of going out and now I am scared of them, they’re up for anything, they have no fear, I see it all the time in the newspapers, stabbings, underage drinking, drug abuse, anything and they’re just getting worse I’m afraid.’

Name? Sophie
Age? 17
Describe teenager? Being a teenager is the best time of my life, and if I had a choice I wouldn’t grow up and would just remain this age. Obviously the media shows us to be absolute nut cases with nothing to do with our lives but get drunk, smoke weed, have sex. The miss out all the bits and pieces on how universities are getting exceedingly difficult to get in to because of how teenagers are actually in fact working harder and harder and harder. Yes I’m not going to lie there are some teenagers that commit crimes, but that’s expected, it’s how life works.’

Name? Amit
Age? 46

This questionnaire in particular was different I was passing by a newsagent when I noticed a sign displayed on the door saying ‘Only 2 school and sixth form children allowed at a time and strictly no hoodies’ This shocked me and therefore I went in to ask why the shop owner had this sign on the door this is what he replied:
‘I don’t do this to be  stereotypical of teenagers because I know you’re not all like this yet there is a minority that come here with some serious attitude and an extremely patronising personality and casually steal what they want, when they want and I’m scared of what I see in the media. Stabbings nowadays are mostly committed by teenagers, you have got to always be aware of your surroundings and I’m just not willing to risk my life in having only 2 students in here I have more control over the shop.’

Planning stages (By Sonia De Abreu)

As a group we all unitedly came up with the decision of creating an opening sequence for a drama. We deecided that this would be first the easiest idea to work around and secondly we all really like the movie kidulthood and therefore wanted to create something around this movie. Our biggest struggle was where we were filming this being because we all knew that the set is extremely important and depending on where we filmed could changed the audiences interpretation of the whole thing. We had many different ideas from school to a block of flats or even a mental institution yet after working around the character of Jade we decided that actually it should be filmed at home to show the contradiction between her and her home life.

Making of the black eye (By Sonia De Abreu)

When making our black eye as a group we researched videos on you tube in order to make this look as realistic  as possible. We knew for a fact that if we couldn't manage to pull this off the whole thing would just look unrealistic and stupid and therefore fail miseraly. We used a variety of eyeshadows consisting of the colours black green purple and yellow to make Jade look bruised, battered and tired. The video we used to help us with this task is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ28UHpdmBw

Creating Jades pregnant stomach (By Sonia De Abreu)

A task that came across to be exceedingly difficult is the making of Jade's (Sonia De Abreu's) pregnant stomach. We wanted the protagonist to look 4 months pregnant, yet this proved to be quite a task.Vannessa Gurung and I attempted a variety of different things to make Jade look pregnant from pillows straight through to plastic bowls yet nothing seemed to work/ look realistic enough to use in out opening sequence. We then came up with the idea of safety pinning cloths together to mould a stomach and this concluded to be successful and after questioning many people they also believed it to look the most realsitic. RESULT!!!

The protagonist- Jade Alden (By Sonia De Abreu)

We wanted the character of Jade to look like a typical teenager. Jade's costume is extremely simple and consists of blue jeans a cardigan and converse trainers, we did this to demonstrate her class which shows she is not of either high or low but yet middle. We wanted her costume to contradict her lifestyle because teenagers that either are in problems or have problems or normally depicted in the media as badly behaved, wearing hoodies and tracksuit bottoms and normally come from a lower class background yet by displaying Jade in this particular way shows the twist in the story.
